Birthday!

Orion started his birthday morning by opening some presents - Great Grandma D and Great Gram Norma each sent $5 for the 5 year old!

Orion got a new winter coat from Mama and Pops. When he first opened it he said something like, "aah nah, dumb clothes!". But upon some encouragement to check the pockets, he cheered up considerably! And then announced that he "really liked" his new coat. There were four little things that I had tucked in the four front pockets.

Mama's favorite collection of kids poems: Shel Silverstein's Where The Sidewalk Ends.

Warning
Inside everybody's nose
There lives a sharp-toothed snail.
So if you stick your finger in,
He may bite off your nail.
Stick it farther up inside,
And he may bite your ring off.
Stick it all the way, and he
May bite the whole darn thing off.

Not too long ago, Orion got to spend the weekend with Grammie Liz and Grandpa LarBear. They got out the old copy of Where The Sidewalk Ends that we had when I was little. This was one of the poems that Orion found particularly funny.

Fast forward a few weeks. Orion and I are in the car and he asks, "Mama, is there really a snail in my nose?" Since I'd been told about their reading, I answered, "Yes, so don't put your finger up there!" To which he very promptly said, "But Mama, you said I need my fingernails trimmed, why don't I just let the snail do it?"

He cracks me up.

After opening presents, he choose crepes for breakfast and we had a small feast of crepes and home made jam (and just a little of the leftover home made cream cheese frosting that went on the birthday cake!)

Getting ready for the party, still wearing his birthday crown! My friend Katy says that in Norway, the wearing of the birthday crown is one of the highlights for all kids. Maybe we should make more occasions for special headwear!

Happy Birthday!

You can just barely see the purple balloon in the upper left corner that was headed right for the lit candle. But you can see our reaction!

Make a wish!

You can see that we all had name tags on, which seemed a little odd, but was really helpful for all the parents! We invited the children in Orion's school class and because Brian gets to do drop off and pick up, I hadn't met very many of the parents. The kids all loved getting to write their own names!

We rented the party room at the pool. The kids got to play with some play dough that Orion and I had made, then we had the cake that I'd made, along with ice cream that Grammie Liz and Grandpa LarBear had brought from Florence, and grape juice that we made from the grapes on our property! For party favors, the kids got to take home little bags of play dough that we had put together.

Presents!

We just rented the warm water pool which goes from 18 inches deep to 4' 6" deep and has this great fountain! Even the littlest kids could wade in the water and had a great time splashing around. Orion led us all in a hearty and hilarious rendition of "What Time is it Mr. Shark?"

:) Florence, Oregon - the coast. They have a little place there and my mom, the winner of all contests, won a three gallon tub of ice cream. So they brought it for the party. We have like 2 gallons left.
Any one interested in an ice cream party in late November?...

I just noticed that there is an extra kid in the balloon reaction photo. It looks like he dived in just to stop the balloon and then left. :-)

So fun!
